Sildenafil, a widely used prescription medication, has faced legal trouble since it was pulled from the market in 2012.
The Food and Drug Administration warned the generic drugmaker of its adverse reaction to a drug called "Viagra," which is sold by Pfizer Inc.
The drugmaker said it has received FDA approval to market its generic version of Viagra in the United States.
The warning was given after the FDA warned Pfizer of its adverse drug reaction, which was listed as a possible side effect in its label.
Pfizer is suing the generic drugmaker to protect its financial interests in the market, alleging it has not acted in good faith.
The company, which is based in Indianapolis, has previously been accused of failing to properly disclose information about Viagra's risks to patients.
Viagra is sold by Pfizer in the United States and is sold by the drugmaker in the United Kingdom.
The FDA warned Pfizer of the adverse drug reaction because of a recent study that showed the drug caused men with erectile dysfunction to ejaculate more than women did.
Pfizer said the adverse drug reaction was a result of Viagra’s use in a study in which 11,000 men were given the drug, which they then took every day for four weeks.
Viagra has been linked to a range of adverse drug reactions, including a stroke, a heart attack and a liver and kidney disease.
Last year, a federal judge ruled that the company had acted in good faith and allowed Pfizer to pay a fine of $2.3 billion to settle an alleged charge that it illegally marketed Viagra.
The FDA is considering whether to proceed with trial of the case, but the judge will hear the case later this month.
The FDA said in a statement that Pfizer "continuously maintains our commitment to ensure the safety, efficacy and quality of Viagra and all related products used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction."
The agency also said it will take further action if it determines Viagra's risks to patients outweigh the benefits.
Pfizer also said it will not withdraw the Viagra settlement with the company.
Pfizer said the settlement "affirmates the integrity of our relationship with Pfizer and the integrity of our marketing and sales efforts" and will "continue to vigorously defend our rights and resolve the issue of Viagra's safety and efficacy."
The company will continue to defend its rights and will share any new information with the FDA.

No. People do it, but getting it through Customs without it being confiscated depends on which agent interviews you upon arrival back in the US.
The Food and Drug Administration policy on theimportation of prescription drugspurchased abroad is fairly clear.
Under most circumstances, federal guidelines prohibit the importation of such drugs for personal use, largely because medications sold in another country have not been approved by the FDA for use in this country.
That said, your personal experience in returning to the United States with or another prescription drug you’ve purchased abroad depends to a very large extent on the Customs agent who checks your baggage upon your return.
If you’ve been honest in filling out your Customs declaration and have listed the foreign-bought medications, Customs legally could seize the drugs. However, the tendency is to look the other way if the drug in question is not a controlled substance and if the amount purchased doesn’t exceed a 90-day supply.
do allow thepersonal importation of prescription drugs that treat serious medical conditionsand that aren’t available in the United States.
However, there are a few other conditions that govern the policy on such drugs.
The FDA’s guidelines apply toprescription medications that are brought in from any country outside the United States, including Canada.
While most over-the-counter medications can be imported in amounts consistent with personal use, this policy does not extend to products that are OTC in other countries but available only by prescription in the United States.
The bottom line: Be aware that you’re running arisk of confiscation when you return to the United States with prescription drugsbought abroad.

Both Viagra and sildenafil are widely used to treat erectile dysfunction. In fact, they contain the same active ingredient. Viagra is a brand name for the sildenafil produced and sold by the company Pfizer. Sildenafil is also sold as a generic drug, which is medically identical to Viagra.
Sildenafil citrate was Albert Wood and Peter Dunn as a possible treatment for hypertension and angina; conditions associated with coronary heart disease. In 1991 Dr. Nicholas Terrett, now often referred to as the father of Viagra, was named in the British patent for the drug as a heart medication. And though Pfizer’s early trials of the drug in the 1990s did not prove its efficacy as a heart medication, patients who took part in the clinical trials reported increased erections after taking sildenafil. Separate studies provided more information on the biochemical process that causes erections, which helped scientists understand how sildenafil could enhance the effects of sexual stimulation and open up blood vessels in the penis. Sildenafil was then studied in men with erectile dysfunction, and in 1998 it was approved by the FDA specifically for treatment of ED and branded as Viagra.
When for the drug in June 2013 it made way for generic manufacturers to produce sildenafil, or ‘generic Viagra’.
